I would not even consider the 2x tel-con on any lens. I currently own the 1.4 II tel-con and can say it works very well on the ef 70-200mm f2.8L lenses. I am not sue but I don't think I had the version II extender when I had my original ef 70-200mm f2.8L zoom but I don't see why it would not work on it.
Only certain Canon lenses are compatible with the Canon EF 1.4x II Extender. As a rule, but subject to change, the compatible lenses include fixed focal length L lenses 135mm and longer, zoom L lenses at least 70mm on their wide end and Canon TS-E Tilt-Shift lenses.
