From a driver's point of view you will get a warning light. Certainly on mine (185, may be different for the face lift models) it turns on the DPF warning light. Note that this light also tells you it needs a service (or the indicator has not been reset) or that the DPF filter is blocked. In my opinion - stupid choice of light.

My 2010 Audi A3 1.6 Cr Tdi has the Dpf warning light showing on my dash, and has since gone into limp mode. I have read the WIKI page for Dpf regeneration for my model and got all the prerequisites to start a 'service regeneration of the particle filter' in 04 basic settings. When I press [Go!] it comes up with 'FINISHED CORRECTLY - NO DISPLAY'.
The warning light signifies that the onboard computer system has detected excess soot build-up in the particulate filter, which is liable to trigger limp mode. Another cause of the DPF warning light display is a defective pressure or temperature sensor. When this component malfunctions, it will send wrong signals to the onboard computer system
